Advantage of Silica Sol Precision Casting

    High accuracy

Silica sol lost wax casting can achieve extremely high dimensional accuracy and complex geometry.

    Good surface quality

High surface finish of the casting reduces the need for subsequent processing.

    Wide range of materials

Suitable for steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and other metal materials.

    Production flexibility

Suitable for small and high volume production, especially suitable for the production of complex shapes and demanding parts.

How Is Silica Sol Investment Casting Different from Other Types of Casting

All casting methods use a heat-resistant cavity, which is the shape of the desired part as a volume filled with liquid metal that is removed once solidified. The way the cavity is formed is the main difference in casting methods. Die casting uses a two-part (or more) hardened steel cavity tool that is expensively and precisely machined from billet material. Sand casting creates a cavity by filling sand with a binder around a reusable pattern or part master. Investment casting involves drying to form a cavity and then baking a layer of refractory material over a sacrificial pattern or master mold.

The accuracy and level of detail vary greatly between casting methods. Die casting is highly accurate, although gravity (pouring) die casting is not as precise as various forms of pressure die casting. Pressure die casting facilitates compensating for shrinkage, thereby more faithfully retaining/reflecting the shape and dimensions of the cavity in the cast part. Pressure die cast parts can maintain a very high level of detail, as long as that detail can be extracted from the tooling features. The precision of sand casting is moderate because the process cannot form very precise and repeatable cavities. It can only preserve relatively thick parts and rough details. Investment casting is known for its combination of precision and fine detail while avoiding the major upfront costs of die casting.

Precautions for Using a Silica Sol Precision Casting

    • 1

When pressing the wax mold, it must first be inspected, and only after confirming that it is qualified can it be operated, and the pressing parameters can not be easily changed during the wax mold pressing process.

    • 2

Do not spray too much parting agent in the mold cavity, and should be even, if necessary, you can use compressed air nozzle to assist in blowing the parting agent evenly.

    • 3

When using a new mold, be sure to understand the mold assembly, disassembly sequence, and wax pattern removal method.

    • 4

The wax model should be placed in the storage tray, and should be isolated from each other to avoid damage, and the direction of shelving should be paid attention to to prevent deformation.

    • 5

Pipe valve wax molds, according to the requirements of 1/2 of the wax molds should be placed in a single storage tray.

    • 6

Fill in the wax model label correctly, including the name of the operator, the name of the wax model, the pressing time, the number of pieces, etc., and do not fill in the scribble.

    • 7

Before getting off work, the wax in the wax tank should be shot, the residual wax should be discharged, the waste wax model and waste wax should be put into the waste wax box (barrel), and the wax treatment process should be sent in time.

    • 8

When the wax press machine is working, it is strictly forbidden to hold the mold by hand or put your hand under the closing table, and it is strictly forbidden to operate the button with one hand to prevent personal safety accidents.

    • 9

It is strictly forbidden to use the sealing surface of the wax press to press other objects to prevent machine damage and personal accidents.

    • 10

      No fireworks in the workshop.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary advantages of silica sol precision casting?
Silica sol precision casting offers exceptionally high dimensional accuracy, outstanding surface finish, compatibility with a wide variety of metals (including stainless steel and titanium), and production flexibility for both small and large batches.
How does silica sol casting differ from sand casting?
Silica sol casting uses a sacrificial wax pattern coated with a high-grade refractory slurry to create highly detailed, smooth molds. Sand casting, on the other hand, uses sand mixed with a binder around a reusable pattern, yielding lower dimensional accuracy and rougher surface finishes.
Is silica sol investment casting cost-effective compared to die casting?
Yes, especially for complex designs and low-to-medium volumes. While die casting requires expensive, hardened steel tooling upfront, investment casting avoids these heavy initial costs while still delivering high precision and detail.
What materials can be used in silica sol precision casting?
This process is highly versatile and compatible with a broad range of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and other specialized metals.
Why is the wax molding process so strictly regulated?
Strict regulation of the wax molding process—such as inspecting molds before operation, keeping pressing parameters constant, and avoiding excess parting agent—is crucial to prevent dimensional defects, surface imperfections, and safety hazards in the final castings.
